The good thing about music is that it never gets old, it never gets forgotten. It is only repackaged and recycled by various music directors, which provides a new lease of life to the everlasting classics of Hindi Cinema. The music of 80s & 90s have found many new takers in the recent past and it’s difficult to say if it’s justified to remix them or not. But clearly the trend is here to stay.

Listed below are some of the melodies of the 80s & 90s Era, which were reprised in the movies of the millenium.

Tamma Tamma Loge (Thaanedaar, 1990)

The original score was by Bappi Lahiri for ‘Thaanedaar’ (1990). Tanishk Bagchi knew he did not have to do much to recreate the magic. He tweaked the beginning with the voice of the popular radio announcer Amin Sayani, peppered the song with a rap by Badhshah, and introduced prominent electronic guitar in the track.

Hawa Hawai (Mr. India, 1987)

Mikey McLeary does his magic with the upgraded rendition of the track. The original master-piece from ‘Mr. India’ (1987) had the touch of Laxmikant Pyarelal. Suman Shridhar with her vivacious singing style brought naughtiness to the song which was in line with Sridevi’s character in the movie. Even for purists it’s difficult to say which of the two versions they like more.

So Gaya Ye Jahan (Tezaab, 1988)

The movie did not do well at the box office but this remix from ‘Tezaab’ (1988) was the saving grace.  The groovy remix has the original vocals of Nitin Mukesh and the effect of the soundtrack has been accentuated with bass.

Har Kisi Ko Nahi Milta (Janbaaz, 1986)

Kalyan Ji-Anand Ji composed the soundtrack for the original song in ‘Janbaaz’ (1986) which became a cult. The new one was picturised on Akshay Kumar & Sonakshi Sinha and it evoked a similar response from the listeners.

  1. Aaj Phir Tum Pe (Dayavan, 1988)

Arijit Singh and Samira Kopikkar charmed the audiences in the same way with the newer version as Pankaj Udhas and Anuradha Paudwal did, in the original version of this track in ‘Dayavan’ (1988). It’s easier to ask than answer which which of the two tracks sounds better.

Disco Deewane (1981)

Vishal Shekhar wove magic with the remixed song while keeping its soul intact. Vocals by Benny Dayal & Sunidhi Chauhan add to the musical brilliance of the revamped version which was originally sung by the late Nazia Hassan in 1981.

Dhanno (Laawaris, 1981)

The groovy song is based on the original score ‘Apni To Jaise Taise’ from ‘Laawaris’ (1981). The additional lyrics were penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya and crooned by Mika, Sunidhi Chauhan & Sajid Khan. The song also uses portions of DJ Aqeel’s remix ‘Kehdoon Tumhe’.

Laila Main Laila (Qurbani, 1980)

The foot-tapping soundtrack has been upgraded to its new avatar by Ram Sampath and has additional lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. If Zeenat Aman set the stage on fire in the original version, Sunny Leone leaves no stone unturned to match the same aplomb and grace in the new version.

Humma Humma (Bombay, 1995)

Based on Rahman’s original soundtrack from ‘Bombay’ (1995), this was recreated by Tanishk Bagchi & Badshah. The sauciness and raunchiness of the visuals remain the same with the sizzling chemistry between Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapoor.

Saara Zamana (Yarana, 1981)

The new version of this song is more than just a remix. While the original song had Amitabh Bachchan (Yarana, 1981), the new one was picturised on Urvashi Rautela. The new version is peppier and is decorated with electronica and beats.
